Florida will demand a total of 385,010 STEM jobs by 2018, up from 322,560 in 2008. Of these jobs, 89% will require some level of postsecondary training. Alarmingly, the top reason students don't pursue STEM careers is awareness: they don't see the variety and social impact of these jobs.

A STEM Job requires application of knowledge across the areas of science, technology, engineering, and/or mathematics, and demands higher-order critical thinking and problem-solving skills. A STEM Job:
- Requires a post-secondary degree, industry certification/licensure, and/or advanced training;
- Links to career pathways with increased earning potential; and
- Provides opportunities for advancement and continuous learning in STEM and non-STEM fields.
STEM Industry has a high concentration of STEM jobs, drives economic prosperity, and promotes innovation. STEM Industry links with partners to align education and training with demand-driven and market-relevant skills.
The concept of the career pathway has been a pivotal consideration in the development of STEMflorida's STEM Job definition. The career pathway serves as a core characteristic for the STEM Job in Florida, ultimately leading to increased earning potential and opportunities for growth for the STEM worker/learner. As defined in part by the National Career Pathways Network, a career pathway may be denoted as a "coherent, articulated sequence of rigorous academic and career/technical courses." A career pathway commences at a starting point in the learning map and leads to an associate degree, baccalaureate degree, or further; and/or an industry certificate/licensure. A career pathway can be developed, launched, sustained with active engagement from partners across Florida's STEM ecosystem and in collaboration with STEM-enabled industry and employers. Access to a career pathway is not limited based on the age of the learner. Career pathways can be articulated to life-long learning practices and advanced workplace education and training, as well as advanced degree programs of study.
